Inauguration of the “LIMES” Program at the Beddawi Refugee Camp – 29 June 2018

Last week saw the beginning of a new important activity by the Società Dante Alighieri Lebanon.

In collaboration with Terre Des Hommes Italia, the scouts of the Al Qadisyeh Group, and the support of the central branch of Società Dante Alighieri, on Monday 25 June the “LIMES” program began its activities. The aim of this program is to provide scholastic support to around 50 children from the Palestinian Refugee Camp of Beddawi. Through the teaching of Italian as a foreigner language and the provision of additional care and attention, “LIMES” has the objective to facilitate the improvement of the overall academic results of the children, while also spreading knowledge and awareness about Italy, its language and its culture.

On Friday 29 June the social centre of the scouts hosted the event of the official inauguration of the program. Authorities from the camp, representatives of Terre Des Hommes Italia and of Società Dante Alighieri Lebanon, children and parents all gathered to celebrate the launch of the program’s activities. Dr. Alessandro Masi, Secretary General of the Società Dante Alighieri, also attended the event as part of its visit to Lebanon.

We are happy to present to you a gallery of pictures from the event. More will be added in the forthcoming days.

The Italian Language and Culture at Peace’s service

The Italian Ministry of Defence and Società Dante Alighieri signed a new agreement aiming to deepen the cooperation between Italian Armed Forces and the Società in implementing joint initiatives both in national and international contexts. The objective is to widen the diffusion of Italian language and culture outside Italy through a more thorough cooperation between the two institutions. This will strengthen and facilitate the establishment of interpersonal and institutional relations between foreign and Italian actors, and it will also facilitate the certification of Italian as a foreign language.

During the announcement, the Minister of Defence Roberta Pinotti underlined how the Italian language and culture have been characterised by continuous exchanges with different people. This aspect plays a role in the positive results obtained by the interventions of the Italian Armed Forces in foreign contexts. This is due, added the Minister, by the specificity of the Italian language and its influence on the humanitarian approach implemented by the Italian Armed Forces in conflict resolution operations.

Andrea Riccardi, President of Società Dante Alighieri, confirmed what said by the Minister Pinotti, highlighting how “the 400-strong Dante Committees’ network in the world represents ideally a place for peace where it is possible to promote our country and our values”. This is what inspires the new collaboration with the Italian Armed Forces, the President concluded.

However, the collaboration between Società Dante Alighieri and the Italian Army is an already thriving reality. In particular, the Dante Committee in Tripoli (Lebanon) has been collaborating for a long time with the Italian forces involved in the UNIFIL mission in Southern Lebanon, providing language courses to Lebanese military forces cooperating with the UN-sponsored mission. The Dante Committee in Amman (Jordan) also launched various projects with the Jordan Army, while in Kosovo the Società Dante Alighieri contributed to the creation of an Italian library in the city of Peja, where another Italian contingent is present.

Music Time – Road to Sanremo 2018: Mudimbi – Il Mago

The 2018 edition of the Festival di Sanremo, the most important national music competition in Italy, will take place from the 6th to the 10th of February. Every year many among the most famous Italian singers present their latest artistic production in what in sixty-eight editions has become a popular event that takes over the whole country – willing or not.

The competition is divided in two categories. On one side, there are the “Bigs”, namely artists with a successful career who are  well know by the mainstream public and have already participated at least once at the Festival.

Then there is the “Newcomers'” Section, which offer a nation-wide stage for young artists who, despite having often already years-long careers behind them and many followers among niches of public, are ready to jump into the mainstream and reach a wider public.

Other than these two categories, the Festival awards other kinds of prizes. Today, however, we will skip technicalities and other aspects of the festival and will focus instead on one of the most brilliant artists among this edition’s Newcomers, an artists that is something quite different from what the Festival of Sanremo usually offers. We are talking about Mudimbi, who is participating with the song “Il Mago”.

Mudimbi, whose full name is Michel Mudimbi, is an Italo-Congolese rapper from San Benedetto del Tronto, Marche. To make things easier we could define him “rapper”, but this is definitely a reductive term to describe his artistic evolution.

On a musical level, his production offers an interesting variety mirroring the long path of his artistic evolution. As stated by himself in an interview, he “started from rap to end up in the dancehalls because they offered open-mic stages […] From there [he] ended up to grime, dubstep, techno […]”. He aims to make his public to bounce, to enjoy the music following its rhythms, or to to make the people to fall  in a hypnotizing trance.

In his tracks he goes through many different genres while writing about a wide range of different topics and issues, never repeating himself and never being boring or lacking energy. He is spontaneous and brave, direct and honest, even when he tells us that the whole society is made up of basically just disgusting beings.

Despite this not-so-slightly negative vein that sometimes appears, or the vitriolic satire that characterizes some of his songs, the track he is presenting to the Festival represents his brightest side, the one that pairs uplifting music to a positive human message.

The theme of the lyrics is a quite classic one for mainstream-pop products: to survive life you need put things in perspective and not to stress yourself out for the problems you have. However, he manages not to be a dull repetition of an already heard thing. Instead, he offers us a incredibly catchy song that tells us not to delve into the bad things of life, since even when everything goes bad it is still good because life is still going: “My life is a fairy tale/There’s nothing that worries me/I solve what needs to be solved”. He also does not put himself on a pedestal, falling in the stereotype of the guy hardened by a difficult life. In fact, he just admit that his childhood was hard just as many other. He simply considers himself blessed for having his mother and her wise words on how important is to smile, despite everything. And being able to do so, to keep going on while being positive, it is the real trick of wizardry.

[Strofa 1]
C’è chi mi chiede: “Mudimbi, come stai?”

Va-come va, va-come va ,come va
Va bene anche se male
Va-come va, va-come va , come va

 [Strofa 2]
A complicare, siam tutti esperti
A esser felici, siam tutti incerti
La verità sta tra due concetti
Finché la barca va e Orietta Berti
Quindi sto sereno
Navigo tra le bollette
Rischio pure le manette
Canto queste canzonette
Va-come va, va-come va , come va
Va bene anche se male
Va-come va, va-come va , come va
Proverà a metterti in ginocchio troppo spesso
Tu sorridi lo stesso
Magari domani ci svegliamo
Va-come va, va-come va, come va
Va bene anche se male
Va-come va, va-come va, come va
